Attendees at this upcoming short course will learn the "feel & release" approach horse handling and riding as taught to her by her late mentor, Bill Dorrance (1906 - 1999) from Salinas, California.

Leslie specializes in teaching students how to ride well and maintain balance at speed and on a variety of terrain. She helps her students to better understand and refine their "pressure and release" and "feel and release" skills, and to know when to use which technique for the best results in different situations and with different horses.

Antonio and Leslie will coach all attendees in the art of correctly "reading" (understanding) a horse in many difference circumstances. She will share her approaches to raising hoof care standards, and establishing / maintaining correct bio-mechanics that lead to and support soundness without drugs.

Taken together, the goals of this course will be achieved through the combination of demonstration, private coaching on Thursday and Saturday, and two-sessions of group instruction on the Friday and Sunday.

Riders and spectators will all benefit from the in-depth discussions that arise from the frequent Q & A sessions (Question and Answer sessions) throughout the day.

ACCOMMODATIONS for Horse and Rider!

The farm has a restaurant and 5 guest-rooms available (see their website) with prices starting from CHF 50 to CHF 135./ per night.

There are enough boxes for class horses are available at CHF 55 (for 24hrs) or CHF 35 (during the day).

There are a number of restaurants, hotels, Bed & Breakfast accommodations relatively close to the farm.

WEATHER!

If you are not familiar with the area, October can be warm, hot or cool . . .   DEPENDING ON....the weather.

Rain gear recommended for the chance downpour; bring warm clothes, sunscreen and a comfy CHAIR!

EQUIPMENT

Riders and owners of horses that are registered for the demonstration and clinic are requested to bring the usually requied travel and health papers, and whatever the equipment is normally used.

Although most horses have the capacity to adapt well to new situations and equipment, in a clinic environment --  where so many things will be new and exciting -- we discourage people from changing their equipment unless its construction, size and/or manner of use creates resistance or a misunderstanding that is counter to your training objectives.  Likewise with hoof care, if you plan to trim or re-shoe your horse, experience has shown that itis good practice to have this taken care of 2-3 weeks before the event. Thanks!

CHECK LIST if you are traveling a long way from home with your horse:

you might be well served if you bring ....extra buckets, a spare rope and halter, a hay net, helmet, easy boot or other, suitable hoof protection in the event of a lost shoe, spare socks, sneakers or boots and enough water for yourself, notebook and pens, tape recorder (yes! you may tape record but not photograph the event), and a spare set of keys for the vehicle and the tack room in your trailer.

When you are a long way from home, it can be helpful to keep the following items available for your vehicle!  Extra engine oil, window washer fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, spare tire for truck and trailer, (with enough air already in them), GPS or map.

Bill Dorrance's legacy of horse handling and riding through Feel & Release continues; and now, you can be a part of it!

If you are a horse trainer and have reached an impasse with a client's horse, this is a good opportunity to break the cycle.

Trainers in many countries, representing many disciplines have sought out Leslie's advice and support and, in not too long, were successfully re-launched and re-inspired by their careers, and confidence about the exciting new direction the lessons in Feel & Release had shown them.

This approach was advocated by master horseman Bill Dorrance, and is still used and taught by Leslie Desmond since the completion of her 4-year apprenticeship with him.  In 1999, Leslie co-authored and published the classic training manual, "True Horsemanship Through Feel”. Take a look through this book before the event if you have the chance.

Leslie will school horses in the demonstration format for 90-minutes. During the session, as needed, she will coach the trainer/owner one-on-one in the techniques. (Note: On a case by case basis, Leslie reserves the right to determine if a public environment is the appropriate situation for every each individual to participate in the work she is doing with his/her horse.)

A horse need not be particularly troubled to enroll in this class. Leslie does accept young horses and frightened / confused horses of any age or breed. If you have questions about any aspect of the facility, including feeding routines, stalls, water, fencing, manure disposal, hoses for washing the horse, etc.

Please direct your questions about stall reservations and on-site overnight accommodations to Gertrud Muralt.

IMPORTANT NOTE!  Before making your online payment for yourself as a rider, or for your demonstration horse, please confirm that there is still space available!

FORMAT AND TOPICS OF FOCUS and PRACTICE

In this clinic you will learn the foundation -- philosophy, techniques and angles/position -- necessary to lighten up your hands, and position your upper body and legs CONSISTENTLY and RELIABLY while you ride and jump.

After some practice, you will know were the horse's feet are how to place them lightly when and where you wish in the various gaits. You will learn how to adjust your horse's head, neck, shoulders, rips, loin and hips  . . .  all this with lighter hands as you refine your new skills on the ground and in mounted work, too.

You will learn how to set your horse up to succeed so that few if any corrections are needed. For some people this is a revolutionary concept. For others, it is an idea that was suspected to have validity all along, but the best route to accomplish that illusive task was not known or, for some reason, not easily managed. Leslie will explain these details and demonstrate the approach thoroughly on DEMO NIGHT,  Friday, October 26, 2018.

Please join us in the fun, learning and memorable dinners

we will have that weekend, and bring a friend!

IMPORTANT SAFETY REQUIREMENT FOR ALL RIDERS!

Outfitting saddles with safety stirrups has been a strong recommendation for my students since the 1990s. This year, a breakaway stirrup is required on all saddles and helmets must be worn.

There are many varieties and brands to choose from online. English versions are to be found at any well stocked tack shop. My preference for western saddles is a stirrup manufactured by the McCoy family's STI from Laurel, Montana. Their website can be found here, or researched later on for the custom size and style you need. Set this bookmark! www.breakawaystirrups.com.

Not an online shopper? No worries! Contact them directly by calling 888-308-0848 and request a brochure!  When you get in a bind, you and the people who care about you will be thrilled that you did!
