Please join us for a very special event with Leslie Desmond, Saturday,
September 26th, 9:00 AM -12:30 PM at Shawna Dahl's Ranch in Mariposa, California.
The public is invited to watch a demonstration of feel and release exercises that Leslie will present to 6 apprentices-in-residence from the the US, Europe and South America.
The horses that Leslie works with quickly learn how to offer unparalleled examples of freely offered lightness. She will explain/demonstrate in depth how she achieves such astonishing results.
According to Desmond, "Many people hope to develop better feel and timing with their horses, and this is possible when the handler / rider understands how important feel and release really is to the horse. Horses that learn how to respond immediately with accurate lightness through the use of 'feel' reflect an uncommonly accurate engagement of the mind, and this is what leads to correct use of the ribs and hips. In turn, this ensures accurate placement of the rear hooves. Accuracy of a light and available forehand depends on this.
"A horse that has learned how to drags it's front feet in the backup, for example, cannot also have a light forehand on the turns, stops and other maneuvers because slack in the rein or rope is not available to follow. The result of feel and release is a movement or posture that reflects the exact amount of lightness the handler or rider can offer effectively. "
If you want to learn more about these techniques and how to apply them, this is the time and place! Leslie won't be in Mariposa again until next year, and in 2017 her lifelong career of public coaching and service to horses will end!
At this demonstration, Leslie will leave us with a good variety very useful, hands-on skills that produce remarkable behavior changes in a horse, pony or mule. For example, if you have a horse that is apt to crowd a person or a gate, get heavy on the forehand, will resist or ignore your rein and leg cues, this demonstration could be the pivotal turning point in your training program. If this sounds appealing, you won't want to miss the chance to watch her work with horses in person and meet several of her own apprentices who are learning how to help others refine their horse handling and riding techniques in the fashion advocated by Bill Dorrance!
From 1994-1999 Leslie Desmond apprenticed with rancher and master horseman
Bill Dorrance from Salinas, CA. She learned his feel-based approach to horse training while she co-wrote their classic manual, True Horsemanship Through Feel.
